CIRMAD in chimpanzee conservation in Kom-Wum Forest Reserve
CIRMAD has been working since 2016, under our Participatory Programme for the Protection of Chimpanzees (PAPPro-Chimps), for the integrated protection of the populations of the Endangered Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes ellioti).
The effort has been through community education, support to law enforcement with 11 community ecoguards trained and engaged, 5 Village Forest Management Committees (VFMC) created, facilitating of field research there by a hosted PhD student, etc.
These activities are guided by, and in line with the 2011 Regional Action Plan for the Conservation of the Nigeria-Cmaeroon Chimpanzee.
From the start, CIRMAD works as a steadfast local partner of the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife (MINFOF), partnering locally with the Fundong Council, under an MOU.
